st. james road, portsmouth

Axis Architecture has gained planning approval for a major flatted development and extension to a convenience store in Portsmouth.

The brief was complex as the site borders a conservation zone and consequently although the design is contemporary it draws on a palate of materials which are reflected in the adjacent conservation area.

16 no. one and two bed flats will form a three storey extension above this existing structure. In order to compliment the vernacular of the conservation area the top floor will be set back from the main façade. From the ground it will not be possible to see the top floor. This will reduce the visual mass of the building and creates a sensitive relationship between the new proposals and the two storey properties opposite. This reduction on the top floor also affords the opportunity to provide terrace space for each top floor flat.
