southend-on-sea feasibility study

FEASIBILITY STUDY, SOUTHEND-ON-SEA

Axis Architecture were commissioned to produced a feasibility study for a residential scheme on the site of a petrol station in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

The scheme consists of 26 no. 2 bedroom apartments arranged around a central atrium.

The building is sited back from the kerb line at a position sympathetic to the façade of its neighbours, and centrally to allow one-way vehicular access to and from the parking spaces provided to the rear.

The two lower level 'wings' help to reduce the visual mass of the building in relation to its neighbours, an effect aided by the mansard roof - lowering the
effective roofline whilst maintaining floor area.

Nearby residential developments are of traditional materials and appearance, offering little in the way of aesthetic appeal. A new development currently under construction further along Southchurch Road however, shows a more contemporary style, employing a varied palette of materials.

On the grounds of the incoherent local vernacular, Axis Architecture were confident that a 'modern' building of contemporary character would sit comfortably on the site, an opinion echoed by the Local Authority during initial discussions.
