Axis Architecture since 1994

The Sorting Office Creative Hub

– Eastleigh, Hampshire

Eastleigh Borough Council commissioned Axis Architecture to design a conversion of an old redundant town centre post sorting office into a workshop space suitable to provide a number of small studios suitable for renting by ‘start up’ artist and artistic companies.

The design challenge was the extremely tight budget, but the design breakthrough was discovering a steel trust rafter structural frame hidden behind the suspended ceiling.  By removing the ceiling, insulating the roof and painting and exposing the steel frame, a dynamic, high and voluminous space was created and by adding Velux type north lights, good standards of natural light was achieved which can be important to artists.

The Studio has been fully let to artists and is proving to be an important part of the local art scene.
